Born: June 20, 1924, in a Hunt County, Texas sharecropper's shack. Audie dropped
out of school after the 5th grade, then enlisted in the US Army at age 18; Height:
5'5" and Weight: 112 pounds. Wounded three times and eventually was promoted
to 2nd lieutenant. Awarded 37 medals from various countries, including the U.S.
Congressional Medal of Honor, and the highest medals from France and Belgium.
He died, during a Memorial Day weekend business trip, in a plane crash
near Roanoke, Virginia, May 28, 1971, age 46, a time when "war heroes"
were loathed by many during the Vietnam War. He is buried in Arlington
National Cemetary.
